Land Hermit Crab (MEDIUM)
The Land Hermit Crab (Coenobita spp.) is a popular invertebrate pet known for its unique behavior of living inside empty seashells for protection. Native to tropical coastlines around the world, these crabs are social and active, especially at night. They are long-lived, fascinating to observe, and can even grow quite large with proper care.
Care Guide
Tank Size: Minimum 10–20 gallons depending on group size; always house multiple crabs together as they are social.
Habitat Conditions: Temperature 24–29°C (75–85°F), humidity 70–80%. Use a secure lid to maintain conditions.
Substrate: Deep, moist sand or coconut fiber at least twice the height of the largest crab to allow burrowing and molting.
Diet: Omnivorous scavengers; feed a varied diet of commercial hermit crab food, fruits, vegetables, dried shrimp, and calcium sources like cuttlebone.
Temperament: Social and peaceful; must be kept in groups.
Tank Setup: Provide multiple spare shells of varying sizes, climbing branches, hiding places, fresh and saltwater dishes (dechlorinated), and enrichment for activity.
Tankmates: Best kept with other land hermit crabs only.
Lifespan: Can live 10–20 years with proper care.
Key Tip: Always provide a range of extra shells—crabs will switch as they grow or when they find a better fit.
Size: Medium
